Newsletter July 2007

Dear winelovers and friends,

As usual things are on the move at Rainbow’s End. On the eastern side of the main house we have started with the re-establishment of the Fynbos. A large strip of alien vegetation ( Wattle, Bluegum, Pine and Port Jackson ) has been bulldozed out and burnt. Now follows years of pulling out the alien seedlings as they re-germinate and nursing the natural fynbos as it gradually re-establishes itself. We are excited about the prospect of having the Cape floral kingdom once again on our doorstep.

The Cape winter has been wet and cold and good so far for winefarmers with more rain in June on Rainbow’s End than in the past 10 years ( 207mm ! ) and light snowfalls on the surrounding mountains.

In the vineyards Francois and his team are busy pruning and should have completed this very important task by about the first week in September.

His brother, Anton, is optimistic about the 2007 wines ( especially the Cabernet Franc and Merlot), and for the first time Malbec and Petit Verdot has been added to the Rainbow’s End range and looks promising. The 2006 Cabernet Franc, released in June 2007, is selling out fast and seems very popular.

We have also exported our first wines to Sweden, and back here in Africa to Namibia — following a visit to the Namibian Tourism Expo in Windhoek. The latter being an annual event well supported by everyone in the tourism trade in mainly Namibia but also elsewhere, and offered an excellent business networking opportunity. Jacques and Ingrid attended the expo and worked hard, sold all the wine they took, exported some more from S.A., made contacts and managed to squeeze in a visit to Etosha game reserve, view the animals and nature and re-charge their batteries.

Keep well, have fun, and enjoy your wine, the Rainbow’s End Team.

Hi Friends, Readers,

It’s been a very busy and successful year on Rainbow’s End so far, starting with our launch in February of our 2006 wines. ( Bottling took place on the farm early in February. ). Our clients and interested parties had the opportunity to have their first pick of their particular favourites, plus  a lovely South African braai on the ‘stoep’ under the starlight.

Jacques, the engineer or ‘pipes and pumps’ man’, adapted a redundant packshed into a bottle cellar and that has been completed just in time for the 2006 vintage to be ideally and safely kept; not too long we hope !

Francois, our viticulturist, discovered a new invention called an ‘ Eagle Eye’ ! The Eagle Eye is an optic electrical bird control system and works by silently reflecting light in such a manner to irritate birds in its presence, thereby lessening the losses caused by birds damaging or consuming grapes , or other produce. We now have two Eagle Eyes on strategic points on the farm where most of our losses occurred. This works very well and importantly, causes no harm to the birds while keeping them at bay. The system is energy efficient ( is solar power driven ) and endorsed by the South African Department of Nature Conservation.

On the wine side it is once again harvest time and Anton, Francois and everyone else remain with their noses to the grindstone in order to produce the best the season and Rainbow’s End can offer.

Cheers and keep well with one, or is it two glasses, of red wine dayly, Ingrid.

Food and Wine Pairing at Peninsula Hotel

September 5th, 2006

Dear Readers, Friends and Family,

The fivestar Peninsula Hotel in Sea Point, Cape Town, was hosting a food and wine pairing last night, featuring only Rainbow’s End wines. Wine enthusiasts turned up at what became a jolly and boisterous party, with music and singing in the background ! Anton, our winemaker, did the honours and discussed the wines presented with the five course meal. Our Shiraz 2002, Complexite ( a Bordeaux blend ), Cabernet Sauvignon 2005, Shiraz 2005 and Cabernet Franc 2006 ( barrel samples ), were on offer with the various dishes and enjoyed by all. We are pleased to say that Rainbow’s End wines will feature on the Peninsula Hotel’s winelist. By midnight the ” after party ” started as the ‘ Old Boy “, Jacques Malan, had just turned 60 !!

Best wishes and happy drinking from all of us.

Dear Friends,

We are experiencing a wet and cold Winter which has slowed down our pruning programme but which is on the other hand good for the vineyards. So far everything seems on track for a good wine season next year.

The Stellenbosch Wine Festival was held during the first week in August and showcased the best wines the Western Cape ( which is South Africa’s premium wine region ) has to offer. More than 10 000 visitors attended the festival and a good time was held by visitors and winemakers alike…Even Ernie Els flew in and out to take his turn to pour wine behind his stand! Food, lectures by the Wine Academy, tutored tastings and ofcourse the tasting of the best S.A. has to offer, were there for everyone to enjoy. Not forgetting the rugby ( Springboks against Australia! ) which was screened in an adjacent venue. A lot of interest was shown in the wine from Rainbow’s End and for us sales were good and the festival was well worth taking part in.

Our 2005 Cabernet Franc was chosen as the winner of ‘Unusual Red Cultivar” by the ” Wine of the month Club “. The wine has been chosen for their Reserve Range and is, I’m sorry to say for the Readers, now sold out.

We are very proud to say that our wines have been selected for some of the top restaurants in the Western Cape: Tokara, Grand Roche Hotel, Le Quartier Francais, Willowbrook, Beads, 96 Winery Road, Volkskombuis, d’ Ouwe Werf etc. all have Rainbow’s End wine on their wine-lists. Unfortunately because we are a boutique winery with limited stock the 2003 Shiraz, 2004 Shiraz and 2005 Cabernet Franc are sold out but there is still some 2002 Shiraz, 2004 Complexité (Bordeaux Blend), 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon and 2005 Single Vineyard Shiraz to be drunk by all you friendly people.

Yours sincerely, the Malans from Rainbow’s End.
